Who Is A Doctor of ChiropracticD.C., Doctor of Chiropractic?

A doctor of chiropractic health care (D.C.) is primarily concerned with the relationship of the spine (structure) and the nervous system (function) of the human body, and how that relationship affects restoration and preservation of overall health.

The chiropractic profession today, has expanded its' original scope of practice to include many sub-specialties such as Neurology, Radiology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, and others.

The Chiropractic Philosophy

While chiropractic has enjoyed a well deserved reputation for success in treating back pain and headaches, many don't realize that the first chiropractic patient was treated for hearing loss. So, how can the spine be a cause of illness?

First, a short anatomy lesson. The spinal cord is the extension of the brain that carries nerve impulses to and from other parts of the body. The spinal cord is made up of billions of nerve cells that branch off and exit between two vertebrae, carrying vital nerve impulses to every part of the body, which coordinates and controls all the body's organs and parts.

This part of the nervous system is protected by 24 movable bones called vertebrae. If the vertebrae didn't move, we couldn't twist, turn, bend or extend. But this motion may come at a price.

A chiropractor believes that a misalignment (Sometimes known as a Vertebral Subluxation Complex, or VSC) between two vertebra, or between a vertebra and the skull, can irritate spinal nerves and interfere with normal nerve control of the body. The resultant manifestation (symptoms) of this interference might be pain, weakness, lowered resistance and other health problems not normally associated with the practice of chiropractic.

Today's doctor of chiropractic is considered a primary physician and can practice independent of medical referrals. As such, your doctor of chiropractic has many modern tools available to assist in determining the cause of your complaint and to aid in a rapid return to health.

   Is Your Spine in Line?

Take a home test

Hidden spinal curvatures can be detected and treated using modern chiropractic techniques. Can you pass the mirror test?

When looking in the mirror . . .

  • Is your head level?
  • Is one shoulder higher than the other?
  • Is one side of your hips higher than the other?
  • From the side, does your belt line tilt down?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you could have a hidden spinal curvature. Your doctor of chiropractic is highly qualified to detect this, and many other conditions.
